Soumak rugs are flat-weave rugs that are thick and extremely strong. Soumak is a type of flat-woven pile. It is created by looping the yarn horizontally around pairs of warps in between passes of over-under wefting. The texture looks like cabling rising from the surface once it is compressed with the weaver’s comb. These durable rugs are very finely woven and feature detailed decorative patterns. They are often decorated with traditional ancient symbols like tiny birds and geometric animals. Many of these symbols are associated with the Shahsavan tribe of the 17th century. Though Soumak rugs are woven in various regions so they feature very diverse designs. Antique Soumak rugs are highly decorative pieces that fit well with modern and minimalist interiors.
